In tourism sector, this city has many lakes and wetlands. The name "Thane" is derived from the word "sthan" or "sthanaks", which means "Place".

Location of Thane
Thane is located in the northeast part of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra. This city is considered as the residential hub after Mumbai.

History of Thane
The history of Thane began from ancient era. It was around 1078 AD, the inscriptions denoted the establishment of historical dynasties of western India. A traveller in middle age, Marco Polo had visited Thane in the year 1290 AD. He described the city as a great kingdom, which apparently had a well developed port in western part of India. The Portuguese came to Thane in 1530 AD and ruled it till 200 years. At that time Thane was known as "Cabaca De Tana". In the year 1730 AD, Thana Fort was established. In 1739, Maratha Empire had conquered Thane. But when British East India Company captured the Thane Fort, they pronounced it as "Tana". They made the fort as the head quarter of Thane. The Thane Municipal Council was formed in 1863. After Indian independence in 1947, Thane became the city of residential areas.

Thane is surrounded by hills of Western Ghats. The city is divided into Thane Creek, comes from Arabian Sea, which is now the major life line of the city. Thane is positioned at about 19.172431 degree north to 72.957019 degree east.
