The hilly town of Tengnoupal is the district headquarters of the newly reinstated Tengnoupal District and also one of the popular spots of tourism in the state of Manipur.

Tengnoupal, Tengnoupal District, ManipurCreated by splitting the Chandel district, the Tengnoupal district is said to be one of the new districts of Manipur in north east India. With the district headquarters located at Tengnoupal, the newly reinstated Tengnoupal district is one of the 16 full- fledged districts of the state. The district is sub divided into 3 portions- Tengnoupal, Moreh and Machi.

History of Tengnoupal
During the Second World War in the year 1942, Tengnoupal was bombed by the British Royal Air Force (RAF). Currently, this hilly town is one of the most strategic locations for the army and Tengnoupal today remains as an army headquarters. In the 1960s and 1970s, Tengnoupal was the district headquarters but was shifted to Chandelin 1974.

Demography of Tengnoupal
As per the reports of Census India 2011, Tengnoupal had a total population of 2158, out of which 1477 are males while 681 are females. The population of children between the ages of 0 to 6 years was 140, which is about 6.49 percent of the total population. The average sex ratio of Tengnoupal was 461, which is lower than the state average of 992. According to the census, the child sex ratio was 750, which is also lower than the state average of 936. With a total of 300 households, the literacy rate in Tengnoupal was 76 percent.
