Tendong Hill, SikkimTendong Hill is a vantage point that is located in South Sikkim. From here one can get a spectacular view of the Sikkim valley. It is located at an altitude of 8530 ft above Damthang overlooking Namchi. Historically, this has been a place to rest for Buddhist Lamas who spent years in meditation in the midst of the calm scenic grandeur. This is a great tourist"s spot where they can catch a glimpse of Sikkimese culture and lifestyle.

Etymology of Tendong Hill
The literal meaning of `Tendong` in Lepcha language is `the upraised horn`. As per the local folklores, it is said that the Tendong Hill had rescued the Lepchas from flood. It had ascended like a horn over the flood waters. It is for this reason that the hill is held in great reverence. Even today the Hill is considered to be a benefactor. The local people offer worship and pray with great devotion to the Hill during the rainy season, to keep them protected from the calamity of flood. On the occasion of Lho Rham Faat the Tendong Hill is offered prayers.

Flora and Fauna of Tendong Hill
The Hill is surrounded by dense forests and is an abode to blossoming tress like that of magnolia and rhododendron. There are about 90 species of birds that flock around the area and a large number of mammals like Himalayan Bears, Red Pandas and Leopards take shelter amidst this forest.

Tourism in Tendong Hill
The astounding view of the Himalayan range from the Tendong Hill is the main attraction among tourists. Along with that, views of Namchi, Nathu La and parts of Gangtok are also other attractions from Tendong Hill. Trekking is also an interesting activity here. Apart from the scenic views, there are some nearby places which are often flocked by the tourists and they are Char Dham, The Archaeological Museum, Gurudongmar Lake, Sanga Choling Monastery and Samdruptse Temple. One can also head to the towns of Namchi or Ravangla from Tendong Hill.

Visiting Information to Tendong Hill
March-June is the best time to visit Tendong Hill. It can only be reached by 6 km trekking from Damthang. Nearest airport to Damthang is Bagdogra Airport and nearest rail station is Darjeeling railway station. Damthang can also be reached from Namchi (13 km) or Ravangla (14 km).
