Ancient temples in Tamil Nadu were built of brick and mortar. Till 700 AD the temples were cut out of caves. The Pallava Kings (till 900 AD) built temples in stone. The Cholas (900-1250 AD) also built many monuments. The Pandya Style (till 1350 AD) was of huge towers, high wall enclosures and enormous towered gateways. The Vijayanagar Style (1350 - 1560 AD) is noted for intricacy and beauty especially in the decorated monolithic pillars. The Naik style (1600 - 1750 AD) is noted for large prakarams (circumambulatory paths) and pillared halls. These were the Dravidian styles found in Tamilnadu.
