Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay was one of the leading Bengali novelists who belonged to the third decade of the twentieth century.

Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, Indian LitterateurTarashankar Bandyopadhyay (23 July 1898 -14 September 1971) was born in Birbhum district of West Bengal. He completed his higher secondary and college from St. Xavier`s College, Kolkata.He joined the non cooperation movement while studying in intermediate at St. Xavier`s College. In 1930 he was also jailed for his activities. After being released from the prison he was devoted completely to literature. He has composed 65 novels, 53 story-books, 12 plays, 4 essay-books, 4 autobiographies and 2 travel stories. He has received Rabindra Puraskar, Sahitya Akademi award, Jnanpith Award and Padma Bhushan.

Style of Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay
He flourished during the war years and produced several novels. His well known novels are Dhatridebta, Kalindi, Panchagrm, Ganadebata, Kabi, Arogyaniketan, Jalsaghar, Raskali, Hansulibaker Upakatha and many more.

He broke the poetic tradition in novels. He added romance to human relationship breaking from the conventional thoughts. His novels allow the reader to breathe the truth of human relationship. He worshipped eternity. His writing was unbiased which is one of his major contributions to Bengali Literature. He wrote based on his observations. His novels are materially rich. He wrote long novels and his characters belonged to the various classes of people. In his novels he experimented with the relationships. He ventured into all walks of Bengali life. Awards received by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay
He received the Rabindra Puraskar for his novel Arogya Niketan in 1955 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956. For his novel Ganadebata he received the Jnanpith Award in 1966. In 1962 he was honoured with the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan in 1969. From Calcutta University he also received the Sharat Smriti Puraskar and the Jagattarini Gold Medal.
