Tapovan is so-called as Sadhus performed penance here for hundreds of years. It lies at an altitude of 4463 metres.

TapovanTapovan lies at an altitude of 4463 metres, close to the Gangotri Glacier. It lies by a natural Lord Shiva Linga peak that rises 6554 metres. In fact it is the base camp for the Shiva Linga in the Uttaranchal hills. It is called Tapovan because Sadhus have performed penances here to realise the absolute truth. This place is visited by thousands of tourists every year. A beautiful view of the Bhagirathi peaks can be obtained from Tapovan.
