Various Indians skilled in writing have contributed in creating this part of India"s heritage in the form of stories, novels, prose, essays, etc. Tamil language literature is no exception in this regard. A noteworthy aspect of this literature is poetry. Poems are found in every culture. Tamil Poems have been composed in southern India during the period 400-300 BC.

Famous Tamil Poems
Some of the famous Tamil Poems are given below:

Kurincippattu: Kurincippattu relates to a Tamil poetry of 261 lines in the Pathinenmaelkanakku anthology of Tamil literature. Kurincippattu has been written by a poet called Kapilar. It belongs to the Sangam period. The meter followed to write this poetry is called "Achiriyappa". In Kurincippattu, love affair of a hero and a heroine is depicted.

Mullaippattu: Mullaippattu is a Tamil poetry of 103 lines in the Ettuthokai anthology of Sangam literature. This pure love poem belongs to the Sangam period. The meter followed to write this poetry is called "Akaval". Mullaippattu has been written by a poet called Nappoothanaar. This poem is about a heroine who is lamenting because her love has not returned from battle. Her love is a soldier, who was expected to come back to home during the rainy season to look after the primary profession of agriculture.

Netunalvatai: Netunalvatai is a Tamil poetry of 188 lines. It is included in the Pathinenmaelkanakku anthology of Tamil literature and belongs to the Sangam period. Netunalvatai has been penned by a poet called Nakkirar. The poetry has been written following the meter called "Akaval". Netunalvatai poems highlight subjective themes of love and human relationships. It has descriptions of the palace of the Pandya king, Nedeunchezhiyan.

Perumpanarruppatai: Perumpanarruppatai is a Tamil poetry of 500 lines. It is included in the Pathinenmaelkanakku anthology of Tamil literature and belongs to the Sangam period. Perumpanarruppatai has been penned by a poet called Kadiyalur Uruttirangannanar. It was written in praise of the king, Tondaiman Ilandiraiyan. The poetry has been written following the meter, "Achiriyappa". Perumpanarruppatai has been written in Arruppadtai style

Maturaikkanci: Maturaikkanci is a Tamil poetry of 583 lines. It is included in the Pathinenmaelkanakku anthology of Tamil literature and belongs to the Sangam period. The meter followed to frame this poetry is "Achiriyappa". Maturaikkanci was written by the poet called Mankuti Maruthanaar in praise of the Pandya king, Nedunjeliyan II at the time of his victory at the battle of Talayanankanam.
