Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is named after a famous Indian cricketer, Syed Mushtaq Ali. Syed Mushtaq Ali was a former Indian cricketer, who was born on 17 December 1914. He was an aggressive Test batsman in Indian Cricket Team. Syed Mushtaq Ali holds the distinction of scoring the first Test century by any Indian overseas, when he hit a ton for the team in 1936 at Manchester in England. A Wisden Special Award Winner, Syed Mushtaq Ali scored four first class hundreds in the 1936 tour. He was an opening or middle order right-hand batsman and a slow left-arm bowler.

In 2009 to 2010 trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was won by Maharashtra by defeating Hyderabad Cricket Team in final. Baroda Cricket Team won the trophy in 2011 to 2012 by defeating Punjab by 8 runs. Gujarat won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2012 to 2013, by defeating Punjab in the final by four wickets with 13 deliveries to spare. Baroda Cricket team won Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2013 to 2014 by defeating Uttar Pradesh Cricket Team in the final by 3 runs.
