Swaminathan Soumya, Indian Chess PlayerSoumya Swaminathan is a young chess talent from India who was born in the year 1989. She earned her WIM title in 2007, reflecting the super jump from 2140 ELO in the January rating list to 2315 ELO in just 1 year period. Logically, this was followed by a WGM title in 2008. She is a Woman Grandmaster from India, which she won in the year 2009 in the category of Woman Under20 that took place in Argentina. She won with 9.5 points and winning on a tie-break. Just a year later WGM Swaminathan Soumya, on clear first, becomes the champion of India. The success brings her the title and additional 23 points to her rating

In January 2011, Soumya won the India National Woman Championship Indian Women Chess Championship 2011, where she scored 8.5/10. She dominated the entire championship and showed tremendous concentration and firmness for the last four rounds of the competitions.

With the last round victories WGM Mary Ann Gomes and WGM Swathi Ghate managed to take complete points and climb into shared second, taking bronze and silver respectively.

Currently Swaminathan Soumya is the 5th strongest Indian Chess Player. Before her first major match at the national level she was awarded the youth girls champions twice.
