Sursagar Lake is one of the most popular tourist spots in Gujarat. Located in the Vadodara district this was built by the Gaikwad family who used to rule over Vadodara for a very long time. Sur Sagar is one of the largest manmade lakes of Vadodara which is circular in shape and covers a circumference of one and a half mile. The lake is 60m deep which was built in the nineteenth century.
Sursagar Lake is one of the unique lakes of the Vadodara city which is located at the centre of the city. Surrounded with the famous Nyaymandir gate and the Mangal Bazaar this lake decorates the city of Vadodara. As the lake is located at the heart of the city this makes it one of the most attractive sights in Vadodara. This lake usually remains filled with water which gets doubled during the rainy season. The unique architecture of the lake includes some underground gates which are opened to avoid over flowing of the water of the lake in the rainy season. The water of the lake flows into River Vishvamitra. The lake is surrounded with stones and concrete which helps to avoid chocking the lake. While the lake is decorated with lights in the Sundays and Saturdays; this looks like a piece of heaven in the evening. Fishing is strictly prohibited in the lake. Recently the lake has been decorated with a statue of Lord Shiva which is placed in the middle of the lake. This statue is 120 feet high. With some lights and water fountains the statue is well decorated.
Alongwith this lake also provides ample opportunity for boating which includes both motor boats as well as paddle boats. This provides great opportunity for the visitors to enjoy their holiday. As the lake is quite deep in the centre it often creates conditions for accidents which caused some fatal accidents in the past. Surrounded with some food stalls these provide opportunities for enjoying the delicacies of Gujarat. The shore of the lake is surrounded with a number of important buildings like the M.S. University of Vadodara which enjoy some of the splendid sights of the lake.
Thus surrounded by some of the most picturesque scenic beauty this is one of the most artistic lakes which entertain not only the local people of Vadodara but also the outsiders or tourists who visit the city.
