Suresh Raina was born on 27th November at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. He is a left-handed batsman and occasionally off-break bowler. He is also known for his electric fielding in the field. He took training from Government Sports of Lucknow in 1999. He is the second Kashmiri pundit to play for India.
Early Life of Suresh Raina
The father of Suresh Raina, Trilok Chand is a retired military officer and mother Parvesh Raina. He comes from a Kashmiri Pandit family. The Raina family moved in the 1980s from the Rainawari area of Srinagar, Kashmir, to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. He lives in Rajnagar, a town in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Domestic Cricket Career of Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina was given the captaincy for Uttar Pradesh under16. He toured England, Pakistan and Srilanka for U-19 and U-17 and managed to score two half centuries. He also played in Ranji Trophy for Uttar Pradesh in 2003.He was selected for U-19 world cup. Three half centuries and a 90 in only 38 balls in this series helped him to attain Border-Gavaskar scholarship to train at the Australian Cricket Academy in the year of 2005.His glorious 645 runs in limited over first-class debut season with an average of 53.75 propelled Uttar Pradesh to win, Ranji Trophy. He was selected for the Challenger Trophy Cricket Series in early 2005.
International Career of Suresh Raina
Due to an injury to Sachin Tendulkar and expulsion of Saurav Ganguly, Raina was selected for the Indian Oil Cup 2005 in Sri Lanka. But this series was a nightmare to him. He scored only 37 runs in the whole series at an average of 12.33. He was expelled from the team and Ganguly was brought back into the squad.
In the fourth match of ODI series against Sri Lanka he did quick 39 to help India win the match. From Pakistan tour in 2006 he became permanent member of Indian middle order. He got his first man of the match award for an unbeaten 81in a successful run-chase at Faridabad and proved he has a distinct quality of run chasing. After scoring two more half-centuries in this particular series against England, maintaining average over 48 runs. Raina was given the Board of Control Cricket India C-grade contract.
With the come back of Saurav Ganguly, Dinesh Karthik and Yuvraj Singh from injury and due to poor performance in 2006 ICC Champions Trophy he was ousted from the team in 2006.
After a successful stint in the 2008 IPL he was brought back into the team and he has been performing ever since. Ever since he has made successful contribution to the team and played some match winning knocks for India. Under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni he has been presenting his natural game and has indulged in attacking cricket. In the 2011 World Cup, Raina`s inclusion in the playing XI did make a huge difference at the end and it seriously lifted the fielding unit.
Suresh Raina`s Career in Indian Premier League
Suresh Raina is a member of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League since 2008. He holds the prestigious record of most number of runs in IPL matches so far. For a non-wicketkeeper, he also has the record for most catches, 27 to his name. His bowling has been more helpful in the 20-20 format as well. In 2009 itself he had the fifth best economy rate in the IPL among those bowlers who delivered more than 20 overs. Overall he has taken 15 wickets in 64.5 overs, at an average of 29.73, in 53 matches, and with a considerable economy rate of 6.87. In the 2010 Indian Premier League, Suresh Raina was the third highest run getter and was adjudged the man-of-the-match award in the final. He top scored 55 not out from 35 balls and took an important wicket of Harbhajan Singh in the context of the match. He also caught Saurabh Tiwary from the mid wicket boundary. He was one of the four players who were retained by the Chennai Super Kings for the 2011 season. In 2013 Indian Premier league, Suresh Raina scored 548 runs at a healthy average of 42.15 and strike rate of 150.13. At the start of the season, Suresh Raina was struggling with his form but in the later half he regained his form. He scored his maiden hundred in IPL against Kings XI Punjab. Suresh Raina scored an astonishing 99 not out off 52 deliveries against Sunrisers Hyderabad and helped Chennai Super Kings to score a mammoth 223 runs. This was Chennai Super Kings 3rd highest total. In the year 2015, Suresh Raina agained signed for CSK.
