Surendranath College, KolkataSurendranath College is an undergraduate college located in Kolkata. The College is affiliated under University of Calcutta since 1884. Surendranath Banerjea, an eminent scholar, orator and statesman, founded the College in 1884.

Surendranath College had a noble vision of enhancing the spirit of freedom sacrifice and gallant idealism among the youth of the country. The college aims at providing quality education to students of all sections of the society irrespective of gender, academic and socio-economic background and to prepare them to face the challenges in all circumference of life with courage and conviction.

History of Surendranath College
Surendranath College has a rich history. In the year 1882, Rastraguru Surendranath Banerjea took over the charge of Presidency School. In January 1884, the institution was renamed as "Presidency Institution" and was affiliated to the intermediate standard of University of Calcutta. In the same year the name of the institution changed to "Ripon College" with the permission from Lord Ripon and it became a full-fledged degree college under the University of Calcutta.

In 1885, the Department of Law was started in the college. But the Department was converted into separate College in 1911 and it was named as "Ripon Law College". The Department of Commerce was established in 1940. A branch of this college was established in Dinajpur in 1942, which is now a separate College in Bangladesh. In the year 1948-49 the Trustees renamed the college as Surendranath College as a mark of respect to its founder. In order to keep pace with the changing time the College opened an evening Science section in 1947 and in 1948 the women`s section opened. The science section became a part of Surendranath Evening College and the Women"s section became an independent Degree College in 1960. University Grants Commission (UGC) recognized the College in 1972.

Objectives of Surendranath College
The objective of Surendranath College is to provide quality education to a wide cross section of students irrespective of gender and socio-economic background. The goal of Surendranath College is to educate the students properly in all aspects so that they become ready to face the challenges of the new millennium. The College also introduces many modern subjects with necessary infrastructure facilities with a view to update education as per requirement of the employment houses and higher studies as well. It also provides the students with quality education and with the values and skills necessary for a human being.

Courses offered in Surendranath College
Presently, there are only undergraduate courses offered in this college. The courses offered in Surendranath College are Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Persian, Philosophy, History, Pali, Education, Political Science, Sociology, Journalism and Mass Communication, Military Studies in B.A. course and Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Computer Science, Geography, Psychology, Statistics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology in B.Sc course. B.Com is also taught there as general and honours course.

Both during the freedom movement and in recent times, the students of this college never failed whenever there is call to serve for the country or to raise the voice of protest against injustice, tyranny and aggression. This tradition of Surendranath College is a priceless legacy handed down by its founder Surendranath Banerjea and others.
