Sunil Das, Indian artistSunil Das was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. In 1955-66 he joined weaver`s service centre office of the Handloom Ministry of Textile Govt. of India. In the year 1960 he founded the Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta. From 1956-60 he studied at the Govt. College of Art and Craft, Calcutta. From 1960-63 he studied at the Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris.

His favourite bull and horse play important role in his paintings and they were instrumental in his rise to prominence. He is an untiring painter who has jumped from one style to another easily in the past four decades. Each of his work was marked with supreme skill and a sense of integrity.

* 1978 Received the National Award, for his oil painting `Rotation of Mankinds`.
* 1983 Commissioner IV Triennial, India and on the jury of the Prix des Etrangere, Paris.
* 1991 Received Shiromani Purashkar, Kolkata.

In the world of line, he has been able to create a velvet measure of dynamism. As far as inventive desire, momentous discoveries and the potent power of the line, the artist reigns supreme and strategic. Sunil Das joined Government of India`s Handloom division, Ministry of Textile.

He was inspired by the force and the strength of the moving horse. His works revolve around man-woman relationships. He depicts woman in her sexual empowerment and in her loneliness. He had around 88 solo exhibitions across the world including Biennales, Paris. He is one of the giants of India`s contemporary art scene. He has served as commissioner to the Sao Paulo Biennale and was a member of the jury of the Pfix des Etrangeres, Paris.
