Sundha Mata Temple is a 900 old temple dedicated to Chamunda Devi. It is located atop a hillock known as `Sundha", in Jalore District in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The pilgrimage centre is located at a distance of 64 kms from Mount Abu and 20 kms away from the town of Bhinmal.
History of Sundha Mata Temple
The historical traits of Sundha Mata Temple and the region can be traced by the three ancient inscriptions engraved on the temple. The first inscription dates back to 1262 A.D. that narrates about the victory of the Chauhans and defeat of the Parmaras. The second inscription is from 1326 while the third inscription dates back to 1727. The Sundha inscriptions carry huge importance historically. These inscriptions throw light on the history of India.
Geography of Sundha Mata Temple
Sundha Mata Temple, perched on top of Sundha Mountain in the Aravalli Mountain Range, is positioned at a height of 1220 metres. Deemed to be one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres of the town, the temple is located at a distance of 105 kms from the district headquarter and 35 kms away from the sub division Bhinmal. Sundha Mata Temple lies in Raniwara Teshil in the mid-east of Malwara to Jaswantpura Road near Dantlawas village. Set in the midst of great scenic beauty, the temple and its surroundings enthral the heart of the devotees visiting it. The resonating sound of the waterfall located nearby captivates the attention of the tourists. There is a wildlife sanctuary near the temple. The Khodeswar Mahdev in Jawiya forest area also has wildlife. Jungle cat, desert fox, striped hyena, Vulture owl, Indian porcupine, rock and jungle bush, quail, spotted dove and 120 species of birds reside in the surrounding areas.
Architecture of Sundha Mata Temple
Sundha Mata Temple, a repository of the outstanding art forms, is constructed out of white marble. The elaborately carved pillars of the temple augment the charm of the pilgrimage centre that enshrines the idol of the deity under a huge stone. The shrine worships the head of Goddess Chamunda. As per a common belief the trunk of mother Chamunda is established in Korta and her holy feet in situated in Sundarla Pal (Jalore). A BhurBhuva Swaweshwar Shivlinga has been established in front of the deity. Besides, the temple also houses the idol of Lord Shiva, Parvati and Lord Ganesha.
Sundha Mata Temple celebrates the Navaratri and several other festivals on a grand scale drawing devotees from far off places. Regular bus services are available from Palanpur, Deesa and from other places for the temple. Of late, ropeway service has been initiated to facilitate climbing of the Sundha Mountain, thus, making the journey easier and comfortable for the pilgrims.
