Summer Hill, A Small Town At ShimlaSummer Hill, also known as Potter"s hill (since many potters go there to collect clay), = is located at a height of 2,123 meters. It is on a hill, 5 kilometres west to the Shimla Ridge, and is part of the seven-hill cluster. The Summer Hill is a perfect place for taking a leisurely walk amidst the tranquility of Mother Nature. Owing to its location between canopy of hilly trees like the pine and deodar, the lush green scenery of the Summer Hill adds to the beauty of the place. Summer Hill is a small town on the outer edge of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

Historical Significance of Summer Hill
Summer Hill is often visited from the state capital of Himachal Pradesh as Shimla is one of the famous hill stations. In the past, Summer Hill has offered residence to Mahatma Gandhi, the famous freedom fighter who stayed here at the Georgian mansion of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur during his Shimla visit. The famous building Manorville Mansion where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his Shimla visits is located on this hill.

Tourism in Summer Hill
Summer Hill is also known as the Potter`s Hill. The pine and deodar laden slopes in Summer Hill have many quaint residences, like one belonging to the family of noted painter Amrita Shergil.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study was established in 1965, now a popular tourist destination in Summer Hill. It housed the former Vice regal Lodge, which was built in 1884-88, is on the nearby Observatory Hill.

Summer Hill also hosts the Himachal Pradesh University, which mainly offers post graduate programmes in Humanities, Commerce, Science, Management, Law and Languages, and was started in 1975. Most students in Summer Hill walk to the Hill Station of Shimla from the campus, though Summer Hill lies on the Kalka-Shimla Railwayline. This city in hills is attracted by the every tourists of both national and international arena.

Best Season to visit Summer Hill
If there is a distinct point after which you will start feeling being in Shimla`s cold that point is at Summer Hill. Usually most people don"t want to visit this place, but this place has lot to offer, one can take long walks to enjoy the view and there is toy train. One can also enjoy the ride and take pictures.

How to reach Summer Hill
Visitors can reach there by train via the Shimla Kalka Railway (which has Summer Hill as one of the stops). Guest houses and hotels are located nearby and many local people provide in-house accommodations for tourists. In the recent years, Summer Hill has been a constant attraction for the visitors. Besides taking strolls along the path, visitors also has the leisure to go to several leisure rides on the horse"s back, through the forest region of Cedar and Oak.
