Sukhwinder Singh is a noted playback singer of Indian film industry who has gained national and international acclaim with his enchanting renditions. He rose to fame with his song `Chaiyya Chaiyya` for the Bollywood flick Dil Se earning critical and commercial appreciations. He has been the winner of a number of prestigious accolades. He has also received international acclaim for the song `Jai Ho` from the film Slumdog Millionaire which bagged an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

Early Life of Sukhwinder Singh
Sukhwinder Singh was born on 18 July 1971 in Amritsar, Punjab. He started singing at an early age. He rendered his first stage performance at the tender age of 8 along with renowned artists Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. He sang the song `Sa re ga ma pa, pa, pa, ga ma re, ga re mere sang mere saajna` form the movie Abhinetri and gathered substantial applauses. Later he recorded a Punjabi album named Munda Southhall Da with T. Singh. Afterwards he joined Laxmikant-Pyarelal`s troupe and started working as a music arranger. He then moved to South India for pursuing a career in the field of music.

Career of Sukhwinder Singh
Sukhwinder Singh got his first break as a playback singer in the Hindi film industry with the movie Karma in 1986. Later he sang for the movie Khilaaf starring Madhuri Dixit in which he sang the song `Aa ja Sanam` earning some success. Although his songs gathered some popularity he failed to gain recognition as a potent playback singer. Soon he realized about the absence of the charm in his voice and thus took a break for a tour to England and America. He made the tour to gain an in-depth understanding about the different forms of music. This enriched his music skills greatly and he returned back to India to set his career rolling with prominence. Subsequently his musical career soared high with his renditions in the films like Taal, 1947 Earth, Biwi No. 1, Moksha, Thakshak, Apna Sapna Money Money, Chak De India, Tere Naam, Om Shanti Om and many others. He reached the pinnacle of success with his song `Chaiyya Chaiyya` from Mani Ratnam`s 1998 film Dil Se, which was written by Gulzar and the music was composed by A. R. Rahman. Gradually Sukhwinder Singh gained a strong footing in the Hindi film industry and became a household name. Some of the most popular Bollywood songs have been voiced by him such as `Dard-E-Disco` from Om Shanti Om, `Haule Haule` from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, `Chak De India` from Chak De India, `Fashion Ka Jalwa` from Fashion etc. Many of his songs went on to become chartbusters. He has done playback singing for many leading actors of Bollywood rendering musical success to the movies. Apart form playback singing he has also ventured in the arena of music direction and has composed music for films like Black and White, Halla Bol, Rakht Charitra, Hindustan Ki Kasam and others.
