Suchindram Theroor Bird Sanctuary located in Kanyakumari District in Tamil Nadu houses a variety of birds. The constitution of this new wildlife sanctuary was proposed in the year 2002.

Suchindram Theroor Bird Sanctuary, Tamil NaduThe Suchindram Theroor Bird Sanctuary is a protected area located in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu state. It comprises of the Suchindram Kulam wetlands at 8 Degree; 7`30 N 77 Degree; 27`30 E and the Theroor Kulam wetlands at 8 Degree; 10`45 N 77 Degree;27`45 E. In the year 2002 the constitution of this new wildlife sanctuary was proposed. It is now maintained by the government. Kanyakumari District encompasses almost two thirds of lowland plains along with 2,058 freshwater wetlands known as kulam or ponds. The place is thus known as District of Ponds. There are other freshwater wetlands like Vembanoor, Chungankadai, Parakkai, Manikaputheri, Thazhaikudi and Manavalkurchi, Thathiar, Putheri. There is also a tiger habitat located at the extreme southern end of the Western Ghats.

Flora and fauna of Suchindram Theroor Birds Sanctuary
Suchindram pond is rich in flora and fauna. It houses a huge variety of aquatic vegetation like lotus, water lily, floating hearts, pistia and other water plants. The sanctuary is often visited by many migratory water birds like painted stork and spot billed pelicans. Many other birds like cattle egrets, great cormorants, darters, purple swamphen, and bronze-winged Jacanas can also be seen here. Pied kingfisher, brahminy kite and marsh harrier, dabchick, grey heron, Garganey, purple heron, cinnamon bittern, open bill stork, cotton pygmy goose, whiskered tern and little tern, black winged stilt, greenshank, little ringed plover and the common sandpiper are some of the birds that reside here. A group of small tress and bushes are seen in the centre of the pond. These help as resting places for the birds.

In 1993, a Conservation and Management programme was carried out by Dr. Robert Grubh, of Institute for Restoration of Natural Environment in Nagercoil. It was done for the Promotion of Agriculture, Fishing and Ecotourism.
