Subhadra harana is a drama based on the story of elopement and ultimate union of Arjuna and Subhadra. At climax of the drama Balarama with his armed forces sets to attack Arjuna for the abduction of his sister. Lord Krishna intervenes and explains the whole incident on behalf of Arjuna. The entire drama, dialogue and song, is in Brajabuli. Under the patronage of playwrights like Gopala who wrote plays like Sita harana, Durvasa bhojana, and others, the muktavali metre, lacking in the compositions of Sankardeva and Madhavdeva, was introduced.

To sum up, the predominant position given to the verses by Sankardeva and Madhavdeva in the dramas of this period were deprived of dramatic action. Erotic allusions that have been present in the dramas of the later period contributed to the entertainment of the masses but they deprived drama of its religious austerity and asceticism. Depth of thoughtfulness was replaced by the needs of entertainment. In the later dramas, Assamese came to replace Brajabuli completely. That was at best an age of melodrama. Assamese Vaishnava drama that attained high recognition under the auspices of Sankardeva and Madhavdeva dwindled with time under the patronage of the contemporary playwrights. Dramas became a mere pastime and like most other frivolous pastimes, it became superficial.
