Figurative sculptures are carved in stone. These figurative sculptures are mainly that of deities that the tribal worship. The word style is closely related with this kind of sculptures. The second type of sculptures is completely non-figurative. It may be termed as stone collage. Symbolic statues are made based on superstitions and common beliefs. It has a very artistic appeal.

Figurative Sculptures
Among figurative sculptures many images have perfect regional style. These images are generally pertaining to some deity. There is less difference in male and female images. The difference is generally in dress and ornamentation. The sizes of such images are small always. Their size is between six inches to two feet.

It is a practice to keep a number of sculptures at a particular place. At many places more than a dozens of figurative sculptures are found. This peculiar tendency of these tribals can be seen in every village. Technically some sculptures are more distinctive than the classical or non-tribal works. The stones used are rough and very inferior. Most of the images are made of grey, brown, black and white stones. Images carved in marble are smooth and bold. Generally one or two forms are carved on a single piece.

The general trend of making these sculptures is to carve frontal images from a rectangular or a square slab. The sides were generally carved little deeper in the stone and the main form is maintained with a little finishing. The general features are developed with deep outline. The forms are bold and rigid. The forms are frontal and can only be recognised from the front only. The back is flat. Comparatively bigger sculptures are bold. Some of the animals such as lion, bull and elephant were found independent. These are bold however hardly they have any details.

Symbolic Sculptures
The symbolic stone sculptures are not made by any artist. In shape and texture they are natural. Their existence is based on superstitions and beliefs. The aesthetic appeal of the piece, availability and typical shape and texture attracts a normal tribe and places it at a place of honour. In this way when many pieces are collected at a place it becomes an abode of deities. Tribals name some of the stones with particular god.

Some tribal inhabited regions are famous for variety of stone formations. They are typical in colour, shape and formation. Colours such as white, yellow, red, grey, green, orange, pink, violet, brown and black are commonly found in stones. Their formations are unique, rough, smooth, crystal like having layers of different colours in parallel and wavy formations. The natural structures of some of the stones collected are so beautiful as if they are made by a master sculptor.

There is a strange feeling of devotion and belief that if once these stones are collected, hardly any tribal dismantles or throws these sculptures from the platform where it was collected or even from the temple. They have respect for these stones as well as for carved images of the figurative naturalistic sculptures.
