Srijit Mukherji is an Indian film maker, actor and writer who came to the limelight after directing his first commercial film `Autograph`. `Baishe Srabon`, which was his second film as a director was even a bigger success. He is one of the few directors in the history of Bengali cinema to taste both critical and commercial success early in his career. His noteworthy contribution in the field of film direction made him earn various prestigious awards like Shoilojanando Mukhopadhyay Memorial Award and BFJA award.

Early Life of Srijit Mukherji
Srijit was born on 23 September 1977. His father Samaresh Mukherjee is a retired professor of architecture and his mother is a professor of anatomy. His father himself is a poet, thinker and painter.

Education of Srijit Mukherji
Mukherji attended Dolna Day School, Kolkata and South Point High School, Kolkata. He received his college degree in economics from Presidency College. He then went on to pursue his M.A. and M. Phil in environmental economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. At the same time, he was working as a social scientist in the Urban Transport and Pollution Sector with TERI in New Delhi. However, Mukherji quit his PhD in his first year and joined IRI Symphony, Bangalore as an econometrician and business analyst. He worked there for a while. Then after a brief stint in Milan he quit his job to concentrate on theatre and films.

Theatre Career of Srijit Mukherji
While working as an economist and statistician, Mukherji was a part of the English professional theatre circuit in Delhi and Bangalore. He has acted in various adaptations like `Madness`, adapted from Paulo Coelho`s Veronica Decides To Die; Manoj Mitra`s "The Orchard of Banchharam"; Badal Sircar`s `The Other Side of History`; Sunil Ganguly`s Pratidwandi - The Adversary and Lucknow 76 to name a few.

In the year 2008, he formed his own troupe named `Pandora`s Act`. Its first production was `Feluda Pherot`. It was a runaway success and was the first ever non-canonical dramatisation of Satyajit Ray`s sleuth Feluda. The production starred talents like Barun Chanda, Ray`s leading man in `Seemabodhho`, and Parambrata Chatterjee, the screen Topshe and film youth icon. In the year 2009, Mukherji wrote, directed and acted in the English play `Checkmate`.

Film Career of Srijit Mukherji
The year 2009 saw Mukherji donning the hat of an assistant director, lyricist and actor in both Anjan Dutt`s `Madly Bangalee` and Aparna Sen`s `Iti Mrinalini`. He has also penned down lyrics for films like `Cross Connection`, `Le Chakka` and `Josh`. TV serials like `Coffee and More` and `Dadagiri` and non-film albums of Usha Uthup also utilized his writing skills.

Mukherji debuted as a feature film director in 2010 with the award-winning blockbuster - `Autograph` which starred Prosenjit Chatterjee. The film ran for 114 days at the box office and bagged 41 awards. The film was an official selection at Abu Dhabi International Film Festival 2010, MIAAC Film Festival in New York 2010, Glasgow International Film Festival 2011 and London Indian Film Festival 2011.

This multitalented director made his acting debut on Bengali television in the Rituparno Ghosh scripted mega serial `Gaaner Opare`. In 2011, Mukherji played meaty roles in Bengali films like `Chaplin`, `Baishe Srabon`, `Dutta Vs Dutta`, `Bapi Bari Jaa` and the national award winning `Shobdo`.

His third venture was `Hemlock Society` which featured Parambrata Chatterjee and Koel Mallick. His fourth film was `Mishawr Rawhoshyo` which has been declared as one of the highest earning urban mainstream films. The film was based on `Kakababu` and it starred Prasenjit Chattopadhyay in the lead character.

Mukherji`s fifth film was `Jaatishwar` which is generally considered to be the best in his career as a director. The film was the musical bridge between two centuries of Bengali culture. Jaatishwar bagged 4 national awards for Music Direction, Playback Singing, Costume and Make up at the 61st National Awards 2014, the highest film honour in India.
