The name, Somatirtha, has been derived from a legend. According to this legend Soma, the moon, was cured at this place from the imprecation of Daksha, his father-in-law. Somatirtha is also called Prabhasa. Somatirtha has also been mentioned in Puranas of 3rd or 4th century. In present day India Somatirtha lies in Ranipur Jharial.
