Sohini Ray was spotted as a child prodigy by her guru and she performed in the lead role of Krishna in 1975.

Sohini Ray  , Manipuri DancerSohini Ray joined the Manipuri Nartanalaya, Kolkata at the age of seven in June 1974. There Shatibala Devi, Kalavati Devi, Darshana Jhaveri, and Guru Bipin Singh taught her. At a very early age Sohini was spotted as a child prodigy by her guru and she performed in the lead role of Krishna in 1975. At the age of eleven Guru Bipin Singh as his disciple accepted her by the traditional guru-varan ceremony.

In the year August 1986, Manipuri Nartanalaya, Kolkata, produced her solo dance debut . She was invited to perform in the Kal-ke-kalakar sangeet sammelan in Mumbai in 1988 and also in Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelan in 1989 as a soloist. She was also invited to perform in the impressive solo Dance festival by the Manipuri State Kala Academy. In the Indian National television she is also a solo-performing artiste. She has performed all over India as part of Jhaveri sisters performing troupe including Ganga Utsav in Benaras, Sharadotsav in Bhopal, and Guru Bipin Singhs award ceremony.

In the year1992, she moved to the United States for the greater purpose of pursuing a master`s degree in dance in University of California at Los Angeles. Here, she got the opportunity to learn the major dance styles of the western world and took classes in ballet, Japanese dance and attended extensive work-shops on dances of the world and also learnt yoga and Pilates. This further aided her in cultivating her own distinct Manipuri style. However, her quest for Manipuri dance took her back to Manipur again in 1997, where she lived for one and half years till January 1999. Gradually turned into a graceful Manipuri dancerm Sohini is still a name in the field of Manipuri gharana.
