Sitapur District comes in the Lucknow division of Uttar Pradesh. The king Vikramaditya established Sitapur after the name of Raja Ram`s wife, Sita.
History
According to the Hindu Mythology, Puranas were written by Rishi Ved Vyas on the Namisharanya, an ancient place of Sitapur. `Panch Dham Yatra` journey of five main religious Hindu places will not be completed without visiting this place. Very near to Namisharanya there is a Mishrit which is famous as the place where Maharshi Dadhich donated his bones to Devatas for making of weapon Vajra. According to Abdul Fazal`s Aaina Akbari this place was called Chatyapur or Chitiapur during the reign of Akbar.
Geography
Sitapur District is bounded in the west and south by river Gomati, east side is bounded by river Ghagra and northern side by district Kheri.The district is located at 27.6° to 27.54°N longitude and 80.18° to 81.24°E latitude of Lucknow. It has an avarage elevation of 150 meters. Total area the district is 5743 sq.km.the main rivers of the district are Gomati, Chowka, Ghagra, . Maximum temperature of the city is 43.3°C and minimum is 6°C. The annual rainfall of the town is 38mm.
Economy
Agriculture is the main occupation of the district. The important crops are wheat, Rice, Urad, Sugarcane, Musturd and Groundnuts.
The district was very famous for its textile industries during 17th and 18th century, but now it is not famous from industrial point of view. There are five sugar mills,floor mills and rice mills in the district. It is mainly famous for its cotton and woolen mates.
Government
District magistrate, an officer belongs to Indian administartive division is the head of the Sitapur district. He is assisted by Additional District Magistrate. The day to day affairs and maintaining law and order in society is the chief work of the District Magistrate.
Transport
By Rail- Sitapur is connected with meter gouge railway line ferom Lucknow to Bareli and and broad gaudge railway line is well connected to Gorakhpur and Delhi.
By Road- Lucknow- Delhi National Highway No-24 is well linked to Sitapur ditrict.
Division
Whole Sitapur district is divided into six tehsils - Sitapur, Biswan, Mishrikh, Laharpur, Mahmoodabad and Sidhauli. There are 19 blocks, two parliamentary constituencies (Sitapur, Mishrikh (SC)) and nine assembly constituencies (Behta, Biswan, Mahmoodabad, Sidhauli (SC), Laharpur, Sitapur, Hargaon (SC), Mishrikh and Machhrehta (SC)).
Demographics
As per 2001 Census of India, Sitapur had a population of 151,827. Males constitute 52% and females 48% of the population. In Sitapur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.Sitapur has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 63%.

Namisharanya: This Place was centre of religious and knowledge. there are 30 thousand Religious places here. 88000 Mendicants meditates here. People from all over India visit this holy places. Some important holy places at Namisharanya are as follows:-
Chakratirth: This places is holiest in the Naimisharanya. It is said that Lord Brahma`s Device chakra fell this pious land and created a round "Kund" which is named as Chakra Tirth.
Lalita Devi Temple: This is one of the shaktipeeth. This is very famous temple among religious devotes. Panch Prayag: This pond is situated near the Lalita Devi temple `Vyas.
Gaddi: It is situated near Chakratirth where Rishi vyas divided vedas in four parts and also creataed Purans.
Soot Gaddi: Soot and Shaunak had discourse at this place Sri Hanuman Garhi and Panch Pandav Large statue of Lord Hanuman is situated.
Mishrit: This is another religious place situated 10 km away from Namisharanya. Maharishi Dadhichi Asharam and Sitakund are holy pilgrimage of this place.
Shyamnathan Mandir: This Shiv Temple was built 300-400 years before and is situated in old Sitapur City(Munshiganj). The temple is a great example of Nagar style of temple architecture.
Karam court The place where the famous badminton player KaramGopichand used to do net practice early days.
