Siju Caves in Meghalaya are world famous limestone caves carved by with a river network inlay. It is popularly referred to as the "Dobakhol" and the "Cave of Bats". It houses the one of the biggest colonies of different species of bats. The Siju Cave is considered as the 3rd longest cave system in India.
Location of Siju Caves
Siju Caves are located in the South Garo Hills of Meghalaya near the Napak Lake and Simsang River. These caves are situated on the banks of River Simsang and comprise several chambers along with unexplored labyrinths.
Structure of Siju Caves
Siju Caves are primarily limestone caves and the stalagmites and stalactites formations are the main structural attraction of the caves. The intricate layout of the caves is formed by these limestone pillars formed due to erosional and abrasional agents of nature. It is an extremely deep cave covered with darkness. The Princess Di"s chamber in Siju Caves is the prime attraction. It is essentially a limestone chamber decorated with artistic development of stalagmites and stalactites and is also associated with a local legend.
Visiting Information of Siju Caves
Guwahati is well-connected by rail, air and roadways with the rest of the country. The nearest airport is the Guwahati Airport and the nearest railway station is Guwahati railway station. The distance between Guwahati and Siju Caves is approximately 216 km. Buses and taxis are available from Guwahati and Shillong to reach Siju Caves.
Since a river runs through the cave, the only time to visit is between October and December or March and May. Rains can lead to unexpected flooding or close the mouth of the cave, making it impossible to enter.
