Sido Kanhu Murmu University has its headquarters at Dumka, the second capital of Jharkhand. Through an Act of Bihar Legislative Assembly, the University was established on 10th January 1992. When the Jharkhand state was created the University was renamed as the `Sido Kanhu Murmu University` by an amendment made in the Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000. The University was separated from the Bhagalpur University and made a separate university. It is affiliated to the Association of Indian Universities.
Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in arts science and commerce are offered by the university. Doctoral degrees are also awarded in Social Science, Humanities and Science.
The university has thirteen constituent and eleven affiliated colleges.
