Shubman Gill is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-hand, top-order batsman from Punjab. In 2017, he made his first-class debut for Punjab against West Bengal in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. He made his international debut for the Indian cricket team in January 2019. His match-winning 102 not out in the semi-final against arch-rivals Pakistan U-19 drew praises from batting greats like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V. V. S. Laxman and Sourav Ganguly.
Early Life of Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, wanted to become a cricketer but could not fulfil his dream. Gill`s father moved the family to Mohali and rented a house near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium so that his son could grow up with better access to cricket.
Domestic Career of Shubman Gill
On his Under-16 state debut for Punjab, Shubman Gill hit an unbeaten double-century in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. In 2014, he scored 351 runs in Punjab`s Inter-District Under-16 competition and shared a record opening stand of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh.
He made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 25th February 2017. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy on 17th November 2017. Shubman Gill received a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Award for the "Best Junior Cricketer" for two successive years; 2013-14 and 2014-15. He made his Twenty20 debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 Indian Premier League on 14th April 2018. He was the leading run-scorer for Punjab in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, with 728 runs in 5 matches.
International Career of Shubman Gill
In February 2017, Shubman Gill was part of the Indian U-19 series win against England U-19. He became the vice-captain of Indian Cricket Team for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was the leading run-scorer for India in the tournament, with 372 runs. He won the title "Player of the Tournament". The International Cricket Council (ICC) named Shubman Gill as the "Rising Star of the Squad".
In January 2019, Shubman Gill was added to Indian Cricket Team for the limited-overs leg for their series against New Zealand. On 31st January 2019, he made his One Day International (ODI) cricket debut against New Zealand in the fourth ODI match of the series at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
