Shrimati Indira Gandhi College was established with the objective of providing provision for higher education to women in order to fulfill the gap of fewer opportunities for education. This was coupled by the Tamil Nadu Government`s decision of providing permission to start self-financed colleges. In this way, Shri. K. Santhanam, who became the Founder Secretary along with Sri Y.Venkateswara Dikshidar, the then president of National College Council, went to the State Government and the then chief minister "Puratchi Thalaivar", Dr. M.G.R gave permission to begin a college on 1st October, 1984.
Its mission is to develop a student`s personality as a whole, gifted with values, warmth, culture and discipline. Shrimati Indira Gandhi College also fosters higher education, women empowerment and strives to make them economically independent. The College offers courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The undergraduate courses follow the semester system. The medium of instruction is English. These are namely-- B.Sc in Computer Science, Bachelor of Computer Application (B.C.A), B.Sc. in Mathematics, B.Sc. in Physics, B.Sc. in Industrial Electronics, B.Sc. in Microbiology, B.Sc. in Bio Chemistry, B.Sc. in Information Technology, B.Sc. in Fashion Technology and Costume Designing, Bachelor of Business Management (BBM), B.A in Economics. Postgraduate courses include-- Master of Computer Application (M.C.A), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A), M.Sc. in Computer Science, M.Sc in (I.T), M.Com, M.Sc. in Microbiology, M.Sc. in Biochemistry, M.Sc. in (Physics), M.Sc. in (Mathematics), M.Sc in (Health Care & Hospital Administration), M.S.W (Social Work). Research programmes are offered to the students of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College on a full time basis. These include-- M.Phil in Computer Science, M.Phil in Commerce, Ph.D. in Computer Science, B.Sc. in Computer Science.
The evening section too admits students in several courses. Separate forms are distributed to apply in this above-mentioned section. Courses include-- B.Sc. in Computer Science, Bachelor of Computer Application (B.C.A), B.Sc. in Physics, B.Sc. in Mathematics, B.Sc. in Microbiology, B.Com, B.A. in Economics. The evening section of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College also offers several certificate courses. They are--Certificate Course in Data Entry Operations, Certificate Course in Beauty Culture and Health Care. Amongst diploma courses in the evening section, courses offered include-- Diploma in Yoga, Diploma in Fashion Technology, Diploma in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). Other courses include-- Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Application (P.G.D.C.A), Postgraduate Diploma in E-commerce, Postgraduate Diploma in Bio-Informatics.
In order to provide a good ambience for study, Shrimati Indira Gandhi College has built spacious classrooms with stylish furniture, specially designed in modern approach that can facilitate easy interaction in the classroom. Audio system has been provided for meeting the demands of quality education. Other facilities include-- syndicate rooms, a well furnished conference hall with in-built audio and video systems, film projects, slide projectors, OHP, V.C.R, LCD and tape recorders, making the study lesson really interesting. Apart from the college library, sections like MCA and MBA have their own departmental libraries. Due to computerisation, which facilitates installation of Library Automation Software information service between the libraries, communication has become really fast and smooth. The library stocks over three thousand volumes and also subscribes to nearly two hundred and twenty periodicals, both of Indian and international fame. One can also avail the Online Public Access Catalogue System (OPAC) to browse titles, authors. etc. There is a Circulation Control System in order to maintain data recording of issued books and date of returning etc. The serial control system monitors the receipt of journals.
Hostel accommodation also is provided to the students. In fact there are 3 multistoried hostels- Kodiyalam Hostel, New Hostel and Kamala Nehru Hostel along with spacious and modern dinning halls with a mess that provides vegetarian meals. Apart from providing all the modern amenities, hostellers have the scope to learn music, Hindi, sewing and typewriting in leisure.
Regular bus service is available for picking up students from various locales. Inside the campus there is a well-furnished canteen that provides several dishes at nominal prices. Separate Computer Centres for students is also present who pursue UG, PG, MBA, MCA and M.Phil courses. These centres are stocked with modern systems like Pentium VI with Novell Netware, Windows NT, Windows 2000 Server, SCO UNIX and LINUX Operating Systems, with total six hundred and seventy five terminals, 64Kbps leased Line Internet Facility, Broad Band connectivity of I Mbps bandwidth. The Microbiology, Biochemistry and Fashion Technology Labs are equally well-equipped.
In addition students also can get other facilities like-- Computer Society of India (csi) & Computer Awareness Society, internet users club of Trichy (iuct), National Service Scheme (NSS), Rotract, Youth Red Cross, Student`s Exnora, Nature Club, Fine Arts, Information Technology on Wheels, Computer aided tool for differently endowed children, computer training for the child labour school children (cheers) under the NCLP project.
