Shri Chandreshwar Temple is located atop the Chandranath hill and also referred to as the Chandranath temple by the locals. The temple is dedicated to Lord Chandreshwar meaning Lord of the moon and is one of the oldest temples of Goa.
Shri Chandreshwar Temple dates back to the pre Christian times. It was built when region was ruled by the Bhoja Kings. The capital of the Bhoj kings was Chandrapur which is now known as Chandor. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. The temple receives its name from the fact that on a full moon night it looks as if the Shiv lingam is being bathed by the light of the moon.
Chandreswar was the residing deity of the Bhoja dynasty. The present temple dates to the 17th century but according to some common beliefs the temple existed here more than 1500 years ago. The wooden chariot in the temple is an excellent work of craftsmanship.
The Shri Chandreshwar Temple has stairs made of granite that lead to the temple. The Shiva linga in the temple is carved from rock and is a special sight. This temple is deeply revered by the devotees. Mamy festivals are observed here in honour of Lord Chandreshwar. The festival of Maha Shivaratri is also performed on a grand scale with enthusiasm and revelry.
