Shivlal Yadav, born on January 26, 1957, in Hyderabad of Andhra Pradesh is a retired Indian Cricketer. He was a right-hand batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. This off-spin artist had cast himself in 35 Tests and 7 One-Day Internationals from 1979 to 1987. Nandlal Shivlal Yadav entered the arena of the Indian National Team when the solid foundation of the famous Indian Spin Quartet was gradually decomposing. Yadav appeared for the first time in Test cricket during 1979 in the India vs. Australia, at Bengaluru, on September, 1979. In his Test debut itself, he proved his mettle, by taking 7 wickets in both the innings, 4/49 in the 1st innings and 3/32 in the 2nd innings.
Career of Shivlal Yadav
In 1979, He played debut Test match series against Australia, in which he took 24 wickets in 5 Test matches. He frequently played for the National Team up to 1987. Shivlal Yadav turned out to be an appropriate partner for Dilip Doshi and Ravi Shastri, to augment the bowling support of India with this newly-shaped spin trio that hit the headlines, in the early 1980s.
Shivlal, for a short while, went through a topsy-turvy state, but soon he reconsolidated position, in 1983-84, when West Indies cricket Team, visited India on a tour. The indomitable Shivlal Yadav picked up 5 wickets for 131 runs in the first innings of the 4th Test at Mumbai. In 1984, Yadav who had the tenacity to continue bowling over long spells could energetically bowl for a record 95.3 overs against Pakistan at Faisalabad. Again the rise of Laxman Shivaramakrishnan faded his importance during 1984-85`s game-war against England, but he never lost the dashing spirit that inspired him to re-establish his aura against Australia in 1985-86. Shivlal Yadav landed up with 15 wickets in the 3 Tests.
His lofty achievement was certainly the capture of 8 wickets in the finals at Sydney. His magnificent bowling escalated India to the heights of triumph. This included a match haul of 8 wickets in the final game at Sydney when he almost bowled India to victory. Later in 1986-87, he fetched his brilliant innings of 5 for 76, against Sri Lanka at Nagpur. His last Test performance also saw him in proper form. He pocketed his 100th wicket, and completed a prestigious record of 102 wickets in the 35 matches, he had played. He did reasonably well in what turned out to be his last series; against Pakistan later in the season and in his penultimate Test took his 100th wicket. The ODI debut of Shivlal Yadav was against New Zealand, at Brisbane on January 11th, 1986. He bowled more than 8 overs, collecting 2 wickets. And his last ODI was against Sri Lanka at Mumbai, on January 17th, 1987.
