Shivaji University was set up in the year 1962 by the Shivaji University Act in the year 1962.

Shivaji University, Kolhapur, MaharashtraShivaji University is situated at Kolhapur in Maharashtra and caters the educational need of the four districts - Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Solapur. The University has been recognised by the University Grant Commission. It is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Yashwantrao Chavan and Balasaheb Desai played a major role in establishing this University. The major objective behind the foundation of this University was to cater to the regional needs of South Maharashtra.

There are 275 colleges affiliated to the University. The University has 34 Postgraduate Departments under 10 faculties including faculties of Arts, Fine Arts, Social Science, Science, Engineering and Technology Commerce, Education, Law, Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine. The University has recently started several new courses including Space Science, Bio-Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Sericulture, Biotechnology, Environmental Science and Computer Science to meet the demand of the present age. University Grant Commission has selected the department of Physics and Economics of this University for the special assistance programme. The University offers 500 `Shivaji University Merit Scholarship` for the talented students. The University has also tie ups with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, Indian Institute of Geo-Magnetism, Mumbai.
