Shillong Lajong F.C. is a club from Shillong, Meghalaya set up in the year 1983 with the main aim of enhancing the sorry state of football in the state. It also looks to spot, nurture and carefully train local raw talent and help them turn into professional players. In the local Khasi language Lajong means "our-own". The club has its head quarter in Shillong, also known as "The Scotland of the East". As a result of easy accessibility Lajong has the privilege to, have in command, most number of student populations from the North-East region of the country. The boys have the opportunity to get used to the game from a very young age. Shillong Lajong F.C. has a powerful fan base in the North Eastern part of the country and is under professional management group.

Headquartered in Shillong, Lajong has access to the largest student population in the North-East and hence the football talent right from a young age. Lajong is under professional management and has a strong fan base across the North-East, which is being actively developed. Shillong Lajong had an average attendance of 11,308 for the 2013-14 season of I-League.

2009-Present
Shillong Lajong F.C gained a place in the I-League for the 2009-10 seasons and appointed Stanley Rozario, as coach, for their first season in India`s top flight.

The club, in 2009, played their first match of the I-League and lost to JCT FC by a huge margin of 1-5. However, in the first home of the I-League tournament the team defeated Air India with a 3-0 margin in front of a huge crowd. But in their second home match against Mohun Bagan AC they lost by a close margin of 2-1 in front of a 30,000 crowd.

The team defeated Mahindra United in Round 21 after being down 0-1 in the first half. In the Round 23 however Shillong Lajong was leading Prayag United SC with a fantastic goal scored by Daniel Bidemi until a 90th minute goal by Edmilson and drew the match 1-1. As a result of such a mediocre show in the I-League seasons, Shillong Lajong was relegated to the 2nd Division of the I-League.

The team, Shillong Lajong FC, played in the 2nd Division of the I-League. As they were hosting the competition so they had the option to skip the group stages and go directly to the Final Rounds. The first match for the team in the 2nd division I-League was against Southern Samity in the final rounds. The match was held on 25th April 2011, which Lajong won quite comfortably at the end with a respectable margin of 3-0. Shillong Lajong played the league favourites United Sikkim FC on 1st May 2011 and managed a respectable tie with the score reading 2-2. This helped the team to win back their lost pride and they won a place in the I-League.

They ended there one year stint in the I-League 2nd Division with a 1-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting Club on May 13, 2011.

Academy of Shillong Lajong FC
Lajong has always believed in the Power of the Youth and that they have the competence to take Indian Football to the next level. The Lajong Academy boys have enjoyed a successful season in the Local League and are also the youngest squad to win the Shillong Premier League in the year 2014 and 2015 with an average age of just 20. Several youngsters from the Lajong Academy have been promoted to the Senior Team over the years and after seeing the potential of many boys who hail from different parts of the North East region, the Lajong Coaching Department elevated more youngsters namely Hardy Cliff Nongbri, Phurba Lachenpa, Rakesh Pradhan and Samuel Lalmuanpuia. The Reds have also signed the three rising stars in Indian Football; Aibankupar Dohling of Shillong, Milan Basumatary of Assam and Chinglensana Konsham Singh of Manipur.

Shillong Lajong FC is exiting from their association with Guwahati-based Indian Super League football franchise NorthEast United FC. The club has taken the decision to offload its holding in NEUFC in order to focus on `Grassroots and Youth Development` in the North Eastern region.
