Shiamak Davar is a noted choreographer of Indian film industry who is accredited for introducing contemporary jazz and western dance forms in the country. He has choreographed a number of Indian actors in movies for which he earned huge appreciations. Apart from films he has also worked as the director of choreography in the Commonwealth Games, Melbourne, and Commonwealth Games, Delhi. His skills has also paved his way to the international film arena where he has choreographed dance sequences the Hollywood flick Mission Impossible 4. Shiamak Davar has wondrously amalgamated Indian and western dancing traditions by creating and promoting the concept of contemporary modern dance in India.
Early Life of Shiamak Davar
Shiamak Davar was born on 19th October 1961 in a Parsi family. He belonged to a family of educationists and his grandfather was the founder of Davar`s College of Commerce and Secretarial Studies. He did his education in commerce stream and later moved to London for attending summer school for acting, singing and dance. After returning to India he was advised by his spiritual gurus, the Bhavnagris, for starting dance classes. Thus his dance classes acted as a gateway to success and international acclaim in the field of choreography.
Career of Shiamak Davar
Shiamak Davar started his career in choreography in Bollywood with the movie Dil To Pagal Hai. His very first venture earned him immense praises and he won the President`s National Award. He introduced new dancing style in the film industry, breaking the monotony of conventional dancing sequences in Hindi films. In the following years he acquired great fame by choreographing for a number of Bollywood flicks including Aladdin, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Yuvvraaj, Taare Zameen Par, I See You, Dhoom 2, Bunty Aur Babli, Kisna, Taal and others. In the film Little Ziziou, Shiamak Davar worked both as an actor and choreographer. `Shabop` was his hit pop album in which he composed and sang songs along with artists like Shweta Pandit, Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan. The songs were also mixed and assorted by DJ Aqeel. For the shows like I Believe - A Shiamak Davar Spectacular and The Unforgettable World Tour, Shiamak: The Spirit of Song and Dance South Africa, IIFA Awards, the Seventh Cairo International Song Festival, the Shiamak Davar China Tour and the Sahara Sangeet Awards he has also worked as the performance and entertainment designer.
Shiamak Davar has choreographed a number of dance sequences for Indian actors and celebrities for events including Filmfare Awards and IIFA Awards. His dance institution called Shiamak Davar Dance Company has produced some of the prominent dancers in Bollywood such as Shahid Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput and Varun Dhawan. Child actor Darsheel Safary and upcoming actors Shubh and Ruslan Mumtaz were also the members of his dancing institution.
Achievements of Shiamak Davar
In the year 1997, Shiamak Davar was honoured with National Film Award for Best Choreography for his eminent work in the movie Dil to Pagal Hai. In 2007 he was the winner of the Lycra (R) MTV Style Awards 2007 for Most Stylish Song in a Film for choreographing the song `Dhoom Again` in the movie Dhoom 2. In July 2011 he bagged an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University for his contribution to the entertainment world at national as well as international level.
