Shenaz Treasurywala, last name also spelt Treasury, is an Indian actress, television host, writer and travel video blogger. She made her debut in films with the 2003 Bollywood coming-of-age romance film "Ishq Vishk", which was immensely successful. She has since then appeared in a range of Hindi films. A former model, she has been a video jockey (VJ) for the channel MTV. She is currently a recurring contributor and panellist on "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore", an American late night panel talk show.
Early Life and Education of Shenaz Treasurywala
Shenaz Treasurywala was born on June 29, 1981 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The daughter of a Merchant Navy captain, she spent the first seven years of her life travelling the globe on board cargo ships carrying potatoes, onions and rice. After completing her school, she enrolled in St. Xavier`s College, Mumbai. It was during her first year in St. Xavier"s when she was discovered by a photographer. It was then that she started her career as a model and appeared in TV commercials of Gold Spot, Philips, Trigger Jeans, Akai, Elle 18 and many more. She then started working as a VJ for MTV Networks Asia, on "MTV"s Most Wanted".
She made her acting debut in 2001, with Telugu film "Edhruleni Manishi", before moving to New York, USA, to enrol in the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute where she learnt method acting, as well as taking up a writing course at New York University. She was thrilled to complete the 8-month course in the same acting school where Al Pacino and Robert De Niro trained. She made quite a dramatic entry into Bollywood, while returning to India when she lost her luggage, passport and visa papers and as a result, was unable to return to New York. This incident proved to be an advantage as she was approached by director Ken Ghosh at a Mumbai night club, who signed her up for a role in "Ishq Vishk".
Career of Shenaz Treasurywala
Shenaz Treasurywala made her Bollywood debut with "Ishq Vishk", alongside Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, which released in 2003 and became Asia-wide box office phenomenon. The film also earned her a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress award at the Filmfare Awards. She has since then appeared in multiple Hindi films, namely "Hum Tum" (2004), "Umar" (2006), "Aagey Se Right" (2009) and "Radio" (2009). She wrote the screenplay for and appeared in the 2011 Hindi film "Luv Ka The End". The same year, she appeared in Aamir Khan Productions" "Delhi Belly". She was last seen in 2014 Bollywood romantic film "Main Aur Mr. Riight".
With her lifelong love of travel, she wrote travel articles for magazines Cosmopolitan, Elle and Femina, while also having written, produced and hosted American travel show "Culture Shock" on the Discovery Travel Channel. She was on MTV Asia for 8 years hosting every show, based in Hong Kong, Singapore and Mumbai. Post "Ishq Vishk", Shenaz had left India for Hong Kong to act in a comedy show called "MTV Whatever Things" (2003), which was the highest rated show in South East Asia. Post "Culture Shock", she returned to India and hosted "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge" (2005) on STAR TV and the "Unforgettable Tour" (Bachchan World Tour) on NDTV Imagine. In 2011, she got a recurring role as Rama Patel on the long running American soap opera "One Life to Live". A few months later, she signed a contract with the show until its cancellation in 2012 and then returned as a contract player when the show started airing its webisodes in 2013. With the show, both she and her character became a household name amongst the soap watchers, developing a huge fan base in America and featuring regularly on the cover of all the soap magazines. Shenaz also acted in the independent American film "The Networker" (2015). Since spring of 2015, she has been a contributor and periodical panellist on "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore", airing on Comedy Central in the United States.
Personal Life of Shenaz Treasurywala
Shenaz Treasurywala was born in a Parsi family. Her hobbies include photography, playing piano, travelling, scuba diving, surfing, dancing, horseback riding and writing. She resides in New York but keeps shuttling back and forth between the US and India, depending on filming schedules and calls herself "Trans-Continental". In December 2014, days before the release of her film "Main Aur Mr. Riight", she penned an open letter to India"s most powerful people, the likes of PM Narendra Modi, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Anil Ambani, concerning safety of women in the country.
