Shankersinh Vaghela was the member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India and had also served as the Union Cabinet Minister of Textile from 2004 to 2009. He contested from Kapadvanj constituency of Gujarat and is an active member of the indian National Congress. He was also appointed as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 1996 to 1997.
Early Life of Shankersinh Vaghela
Shankersinh Vaghela was born on 21st July 1940 to father Shri Laxmansinh and mother Smt. Nathuba at Vasan, Gandhinagar District (Gujarat). He did M.A. in Economics from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad (Gujarat). He is married to Gulab Ba and the couple has three sons.
Political Career of Shankersinh Vaghela
Shankersinh Vaghela in his political career has served in various positions. He has been the Organising and General Secretary of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in Gujarat in the year 1971-77. He was elected to 6th Lok Sabha in 1977. In the year 1977-78 he was a member of the Committee on Estimates. During 1977 to 1979 Vaghela was a Member of Committee on Papers Laid on the Table, Member, Consultative Committee Ministry of Irrigation and Agriculture. He also served as the Vice-President of the Janata Party in Gujarat in 1977-80. He was the General Secretary and President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.) in Gujarat in 1980-91. He was the Member of Rajya Sabha during 1984-89. He was the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Ministry of Industry in 1984-89, minister of House Committee, Rajya Sabha in 1984-86. Vaghela was a Member of the Committee on Public Undertakings in 1986-87. He was re-elected to 9th Lok Sabha (2nd term) in 1989. He was a Member of the Consultative Committee and the Ministry of Petroleum and Petro-Chemicals. In 1991 he was Re-elected to 10th Lok Sabha whoch was his 3rd term. He served as the Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 1996-97. During the 13th Lok Sabhain 1999 he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. This was his 4th term. Again during the 14th Lok Sabha in the year 2004 he was re-elected. From 23 May 2004- May 2009 Vaghela served as the Union Cabinet Minister.
