Also called the Kartik Purnima fair, it is especially popular amongst the Garasia and Bhil community. The Shamlaji fair is famous for the bath in the Nagdhara kund and the centuries old traditions. It is held at Shamlaji situated in the Sabarkantha district near the border between Gujarat and Rajasthan. The fair sees participation of more than two lakh people from different parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Significance of Shamlaji Fair
The fair is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the month of November every year and lasts for more than two weeks. This fair is dedicated to Lord Shamlaji and it is an important festival for the tribal people. The Bhil community has tremendous faith in the powers of Shamlaji who they lovingly refer to as Kaliyo Dev. During the fair, the devotees worship the deity in Shamlaji temple. They take holy bath in the river Meshwo that is situated near Shamlaji temple.

The Shamlaji temple is of great archaeological significance. It is built in the 11th century using white sandstone and bricks. The Shamlaji temple is a renowned Vaishnav Shrine. The deity housed in this shrine is known by various names like Gadadhar (bearer of the mace) and Shaksi Gopal. The temple is nestled on the banks of the river Meshwo, in veneration of Lord Vishnu. The temple is believed to be over 500 years old. The outer walls of this temple feature episodes from sacred epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata that are beautifully engraved on them. The temple also features beautiful domed ceilings and a traditional north Indian spire over the main shrine.

Attractions of Shamlaji Fair
At the time of fair, various stalls are put up from where people can purchase religious things, silver ornaments, metal wares and many other household items. The pilgrims arrive in groups, singing devotional songs and carry religious banners. With so much fun and frolic, this fair is a treat to the eyes.

Shamlaji fair is well-linked via railways and road routes. The village is located on the Ahmedabad-Delhi high road.
