In the Hindu mythology it is stated that Satakarni was the third of the Satavahana kings. He was the ruler in Central India around 180 B.C.
Satakarni was the son of Kunala. He ruled for only two years and he defeated the Sungas and became the emperor of Western Malwa region. Satakarni is mentioned in the Hathigumpha inscription of Kalinga as a rival to king Kharavela.
Satakarni is believed to perform two Aswamedhas or horse sacrifices to declare his power.
He was married to Naganika, a member of the Maharathi family. She wrote the Naneghat inscription, in which she describes Satakarni as the Lord of Dakshinapatha, wielder of the unchecked wheel of Sovereignty.
In the legends it is affirmed that Satakarni was killed in battle and then he was succeeded by his two young sons Vedistri and Satisisri.
