Sarinda is a special type of string instrument which is similar to the fiddles or lutes. It is played with a bow and the instrument has three strings. The bottom part of the front of its hollow wooden sound-box is covered with the animal skin. It is played while sitting on the ground in vertical orientation.
The sarinda seems to have its origin in tribal fiddle instrument known as "Dhodro Banam" found throughout the central part of North-Western and Eastern part of India. It is thus essential in the culture of Santhals of West Bengal, Orissa and Bihar.
The Sarinda was also introduced to the Sikhs and was also popularized by them as well in devotional music by Sikh guru Arjan Dev. Many ethnic groups of India like the Bengali bauls, the folk artists of Rajasthan, Assam and Tripura find the use of Sarinda in their conventional dance and music. It is the sole accompany for a solo or group folk singer(s).
