Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner, RajasthanThe Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC) is a renowned medical institution situated in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The college was established in 1959 and is considered as the second Medical College in Rajasthan. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Mohan Lal Sukhadia and it was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The college was initially known as the Bikaner Medical College and later, the State Government of Rajasthan decided to name the college after Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel.

During the earlier years, from July 1959 to January 1964, the Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC), Bikaner, Rajasthan conducted its activities in the building of War Hospital No.1 that later became teachers` training college. The college was shifted to its present building in the early part of 1964 and it got recognition from the Medical Council of India in the same year. The first batch of students of this college appeared in the final year of MBBS in 1964, as well. The SPMC got recognition for its courses like M.D. in Medicine, Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology) and M.S. in General Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology, in January 1967. The college was recognized for M.S. in Ophthalmology in July 1967 and soon after for M.D. in Pediatrics and M.S. in ENT Diseases. The M.S. in Orthopedic course of the college got recognized in 1970.

The Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC), Bikaner, Rajasthan established its Coronary Care Unit in 1975-76. This was the first coronary care unit in Rajasthan. The Anesthesia Department of the college got the ABL-II machine for the first time in 1978 for blood gas analysis. Many facilities like E.E.G., E.M.G, Haemodialysis, Echocardiography, Tread mill test, Endoscopies and Respiratory care units were also started during the 1980s. The college has 100 seats for the MBBS courses and 63 seats for the post graduate students. There are separate hostels for students; one for boys, one for girls in the college and one hostel for interns is also available.

There are many hospitals associated with the Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC), Bikaner, Rajasthan. The hospitals include the P.B.M. Male Hospital, P.B.M. Female Hospital, G.G.J. TB Hospital, Eye Department, Pediatrics Department and the Acharya Tulsi Regional Cancer Treatment and Research Center.
