Saratchand Thiyam was born on 27th Feb. 1961 in Imphal. He was an engineer by profession. However he wrote poems at an early age. His first book is a collection of poems Tengali Kaarba podon was published in 1980. This was followed by two other anthologies, chho chaboon (1989) and Africa (1993). Next was the travelogue Hajjlakpa eishing gi Manakta (1994) is a consequence of his poetic interaction with the South Indians in the state of Kerala.
The craft, style, language of his poems put him in the "post-modernist" category. His poetry breathes contemporariness of human society and reflects pain and agony of mankind. Humanism is main theme of his poems.
He has held various positions include: Assistant Editor (1986-90) of Lei Langba Quarterly, General Secretary (1987-89) of Elite Group of Performing Artiste, Joint Secretary (1988-92) Writers` Forum(Imphal), Joint Secretary (1990-92) of the Cultural Forum(Manipur), Joint Editor (1990-95) of Sahityagi Pao, Joint Secretary (1992-93) of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad(Imphal), General Secretary (1992-96) of Naharol Sahitya Premee Samiti, Editor (1998-2002) of Wakhal, General Secretary of Asheilup Manipur, Editor Saklon. He has also been the broadcaster of All India Radio, TV and Private Channels. He is also a Freelance Columnist.
His other works include: Yumlingdabashing gi Yum, Nungshibi Greece, O Lovely Greece and Tsunami. He has received Sportswiter of the Year (1996-97), Dingko Sportswriter Award (1999), Jamini Sunder Guha Gold Medal(2002) and Sahitya Akademi Award(2006).
He belonged to the Third Generation" or "Post Modernist". His poems are different in context of expression and diction. Most of his poems are lyrical. He is sensible to the sufferings of the people.
