Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University was set up in the year 1983 through the partition of Nagpur University and was named after great saint Sant Gadge Baba. It is also known as Amravati University. The University caters the educational needs of 5 districts - Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Yavatmal and Washim. The University has been recognised by the University Grant Commission. Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University was selected as the member of Association of Commonwealth Universities.
The University offers post graduate courses in various disciplines under 10 faculties including Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Home Science, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering & Technology. There are 21 departments under these faculties. Several modern courses like Biotechnology, Chemical-Technology, Computer science, Business Management are conducted by the University. The university also offers several research programmes.
Research centres are available in Yavatmal, Akot, Khamgaon, Washim, Dhamangaon, Karanja Lad, Warud, Buldhana, Umarkhed, Mangrulpir, Ghatanji and Malkapur.
