Sankha Dwipa is one of the Puranic Islands. In the Vayu Purana it is mentioned that Sankha Dwipa is a minor island. It is one of the nine divisions of Bharata Varsha. Sankha-dwipa was peopled by Mlechchhas or impure foreigners, who worshipped Hindu deities. Thus, they were connected with India. This also accounts for "Sankhasura", a King of a portion of Sankha-dwipa, who was killed by Krishna, the king who resided in the palace in the island.
