ODI Career of Sanjay Manjrekar
Manjrekar`s One-Day International debut in the India vs. West Indies at Rajkot on January 5th, 1988, was not at all impressive. He ended up with an insignificant 19 runs innings, though he dexterously grabbed the catch of CL Hooper. Thus Sanjay Manjrekar was unable to rise to prominence in his debut performance. Nevertheless, in 1988-89, he displayed his prowess. In the face of formidable pace shafts from West Indies, at Bridgetown, he remained firm, and steadily reached a valorous hundred.
Sanjay Manjrekar, definitely had attained the pinnacle of perfection that particular phase of his career. In Pakistan, he flaunted a magnificent 218 as well as a fascinating hundred. Sanjay Manjrekar had the courage and calibre to ward off the powerhouse bowling of bowling stalwarts of Pakistan, namely, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan and the difficult leg spinner, Abdul Qadir.
However, the inconsistent performance standards of Sanjay Manjrekar fell into an unsuccessful form, in the 1991-92 series in Australia. Manjrekar strove hard against the bewildering bowling of Australia on fast, bouncy pitches. After 3 years of being in the backseat, in 1992, in the Test debut of Zimbabwe, the veteran Sanjay Manjrekar scored a match-winning century to court victory and rescue Team India from a disgraceful defeat against the newcomer Zimbabwe, starting off their journey in Test cricket. Next to this remarkable feat, the Indian squad then ventured out to South Africa. In this series, which brought India disappointing loss, Sanjay Manjrekar failed miserably.
Removal of Sanjay Manjrekar
Sanjay Manjrekar was excluded from the battalion that was preparing itself for the England tour, in 1993. India tasted success in this series, with the cricketers doing their best to savour victory. However, this win rendered the stay of Sanjay Manjrekar in the team, as irregular. Meanwhile, the growth of other skilled batsmen, like Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly, overshadowed Manjrekar. Sanjay Manjrekar was dropped during the 1997 series against West Indies. He was relegated to the background in the sphere of international cricket.
