The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting is one of the sections of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Theatre category. India is a country with innumerous talented actors, who are working in different mediums like theatres, TV soaps, films, etc. However, only the actors from theatres are presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting. They receive the award for showing extraordinary performances in different mediums of theatre like Bengali, Assamese, Kannada, Malayalam, etc. The award is a kind of recognition to the great contribution that they have made to their respective theatre industries. The first receivers of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting were the Marathi theatre personality, Narayan Rao Rajhans `Bal Gandharva` and the Kannada theatre personality, Gubbi Veeranna. Both of them won the award in 1955 and since then, several other eminent actors have received the award.
