Sangameswarar alayam is a famous Hindu temple located in Bhavani, in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the confluence of Kaveri River, Bhavani River and `agaya gangai.` The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is known as Kooduthurai by the local people residing close to the temple. The temple finds its mention in ancient old Tamil literatures like Thiruppugazh, Pillaithamizh written by Thirugnanasambandar and Arunagiriyar, as Thirunana.

Legend of Sangameswarar Temple
Sangameswarar Temple is associated with a legend. According to it a demon practised severe penance on Lord Shiva. The Lord being satisfied with his devotion granted him the boon that no one will be able to kill him. He thus began tormenting the common people and the sages. The people approached Lord Indra for help. Lord Indra told them only Lord Shiva could help them. The people began praying to the Lord for help. Finally the demon was killed by the Lord.

History of Sangameswarar Temple
The Chola king Karikala Chola did not have any heir to succeed him. One day he dreamt about the miracles of Lord Shiva in various places. He narrated the incident to his Gurus and scholars who believed that if he prayed to the Lord he might be blessed with a child. They advised him to build Shiva temples. As advised by them he built 36 Shiva temples. The Sangameswarar Temple is the 31s t temple built by Karikala.

Architecture of Sangameswarar Temple
Sangameswarar Temple has been beautifully designed and decorated. The lines of Brahmma Sutra have been written on the head of the Shivalinga. It is believed that by praying to him one can get rid of many problems. The Lord is thought to save people from adverse destinies. Lord Muruga is seen in the form of Somaskanda killing the demon Surapanma. He is seen riding his vehicle peacock and faces the north direction. He has six faces and holds different weapons in his 12 hands. The shrine of Mother Akhilandeswari is located on the left of the presiding deity. A pillar on the west side is adorned with the image of Sri Anjaneya. Sangameswarar temple has a huge hall for social events. A beautiful river side garden and a round boat ride are also located here.

Festivals of Sangameswarar Temple
Sangameswarar Temple organizes many festivals on a grand scale. The temple is beautifully decorated with flowers and lights. The Brahmmotsaam festival is celebrated in the month of Chithirai i.e. during April-May. Somer other festivals celebrated here are Vaikasi Visakam (May-June), Thai Poosam (January-February), Aadi Velli (July-August), Aadipooram (July-August), Tirukarthikai (November-December), Shivaratri (February-March), Annabishekam, Skanda Sashti in Aipasi (October-November), Vinayaka Chaturthi and Navaratri in Purattasi (September-October).
