Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, RajasthanSambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary situated at a distance of about 60 kilometres from the city of Jaipur in Rajasthan is the home to rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Sambhar Lake is known to be the largest saline lake of India which spans over an area of 190 square kilometres. The place is a paradise for ornithologists and bird watchers as it hosts a great population of avian species. It spans over an area of 24,000 hectares. Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is also a part of the Project Tiger conservation efforts. The sanctuary with its picturesque landscape serves as an enjoyable tourist destination, especially for the nature lovers.

Geography of Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary
Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is fed by a number of seasonal freshwater streams along with two major rivers namely Rupangarh and Mendha. Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary has a roughly elliptical shape which has been sectioned into two by a five kilometres long stone dam. The eastern section houses the reservoirs for salt extraction, saltpans and canals. From the western section water is pumped to the other side through sluice gates after the water reaches a degree of salinity perfect for salt extraction. The place enjoys tropical climate. The weather remains quite hot during summers during which the average temperature is 45 degree Celsius. Winters are much chilly in the sanctuary and temperature goes below 10 degree Celsius.

Fauna of Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary
The prime attractions of Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary are the Flamingos and Pelicans. Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, RajasthanIn fact it is regarded as the second most significant habitat for Flamingos after Rann of Kutch, the main site of their breeding. Other species which are common in the sanctuary enlist Shovelers, Coots, Black-Winged Stilts, Redshanks, Sandpipers, Storks and many others. The gorgeous birds feeding on the swarming algae of the lake is a delightful view. The place also shelters a number of Tigers. Several rare avian species also flock around the sanctuary. Around 45 species of aquatic birds have also been recorded here including Geese, Ducks and Shorebirds.

Visiting Information
Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is best visited between the months of October and March. Bird safari and jungle safari are greatly relished here. The nearest airport is situated in Jaipur located at a distance of 118 kilometres from Sambhar. The airport connects with all the major cities of the country. One can avail buses or cabs from there to reach the sanctuary. Sambhar Salt Lake station serves as the nearest railway station which is well connected to Jaipur Railway Station. Sambhar Lake Wildlife Sanctuary can also be approached via roadways. The place is connected to Malhan through National Highway-8 and the latter is connected to Jaipur.
