Sajid-Wajid is a Bollywood music director duo known for rendering enchanting music to a number of popular Hindi films. The duo comprises brothers Sajid Ali and Wajid Ali. For their contribution in the field of music, they have been granted the lifetime membership of International Film and Television Research Centre of Asian Academy of Film and Television. The duo has composed a number of hit songs and have been conferred many prestigious accolades.
Early Life of Sajid-Wajid
Sajid Ali and Wajid Ali were born in a family having rich musical background. Their father, named Sharafat Khan, was a renowned Tabla player. Their grandfather, Ustad Abdul Latif, was the recipient of one of the highest civilian awards in India, Padma Shri, by the Government of India. Sajid-Wajid have received their formal music training from maestros like Ustad Allahrakha Khan and his brother Das Babu. Sajid initially ventured into the field of import-export business but later he turned his focus to music owing to the inspiration by some of his friends. Subsequently Sajid-Wajid pursued a career in music direction. They worked along with their father Ustad Sharafat Khan on a music album, which unfortunately never released. Afterwards they started taking up independent projects as a music director duo.
Career of Sajid-Wajid
Sajid-Wajid marked their debut in the field of music direction in the year 1998 by scoring for Sohail Khan`s film Pyar Kiya To Darna Kiya. In the following year they composed music for Sonu Nigam`s popular album Deewaana. The songs from the album `Ab Mujhe Raat Din`, `Deewaana Tera` and `Iss Kadar Pyaar Hai` became chartbusters and the music director duo attained prominence in the film industry with the album`s success. In the same year, 1999, they also composed music for the Bollywood flick Hello Brother in which a few songs like
`Hello Brother`, `Chupke Se Koi Aayega` and `Hata Saawan Ki Ghata` received major popularity. In the year 2000, their ventures included the movie Baaghi. In the following years they scored for a number of Bollywood flicks such as Kal Kissne Dekha, Jaane Hoga Kya, Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar, The Killer, Chori Chori, Gunaah and Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai gaining more fame in the film industry. Their music is known to have ornamented many films starring Salman Khan like Dabangg, Veer, Main Aur Mrs Khanna, Wanted, Ek Tha Tiger, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Tere Naam and many more. Several songs of these films went on to become superhit adding to the fame of the duo. Wajid has also voiced a number of songs composed by them. Non film ventures of the duo also comprise the music albums Khoya Khoya Chand and Tera Intezar. Apart from these, they have also written the lyrics for a few songs in the films like Nishabd, Wanted, Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, Dabangg 2, Jai Ho and others.
Sajid-Wajid have also worked for television shows. In 2012 they appeared as mentors for Zee TV reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar. They serve as the brand ambassadors of Radio Noida 107.4F. The title track for the TV reality show Bigg Boss, Season 4 and 6, were composed by them. They are also credited for composing the IPL 4 theme song Dhoom Dhoom Dhoom Dhadaka and the theme song for Kings XI Punjab. In the former track, Wajid has also rendered his voice as a singer.
Achievements of Sajid-Wajid
Sajid-Wajid have received a number of accolades for their compositions. In the year 2011 they received Screen Award for Best Music Director, Apsara Award for Best Music Director, Zee Cine Award for Best Music Director, Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, Lion club Award for Best Music Director, IIFA Best Music Director Award, Mirchi Music Awards - Album of The Year, Global Indian Music Academy Awards for Best Music Director and Global Indian Music Academy Awards for Best Film Album, all for the film Dabangg. In the year 2012 they won BIG Star Most Entertaining Music for the film Ek Tha Tiger.
