Sa-Ai Ceremony is one of the traditional games which are performed within the Kuki tribe. In this the performer after performing the ceremony of purification informs his Becha and Tucha relatives about his intention of performing the Sa- Ai ceremony. After his declaration he has to take the permission of the chief, the Thiempu and all his Becha and Tucha relatives. The Thiempu shall then perform certain rites before he leaves for Sa-Ai ceremony. Sa-Ai Ceremony claims that if any person intends to perform the ceremony, he must be eligible enough to do so. He should possess training in hunting wild animals like a ferocious tiger, or wild animals like a leopard or even dangerous birds like eagle. As this ritual is largely meant to celebrate the event of hunting big animals, the hunter should be either a good and brave hunter or should be closely associated with great hunters of the tribe by being either a brother or close relative or friend of such great hunters. This shall help him to possess a lot of skill in hunting.
Sa-Ai Ceremony begins with offering of Zu to all the Young boys and girls of the village and his own Tuchas and Bechas relatives while requesting them to help him in preparing for the ceremonies. As a preparation of the ceremony the Tuchas and Bechas select a tree which is marked as the post of the Mithun often known as Seil - Khoum that must have at least three branches attached to one strong trunk ant at different levels. It needs two more trees with similar branches that should be near the Bhila or the house of the performer. Once done the priest then begins to perform certain rituals with the Zu after which the performer leaves for hunting. The ceremony then follows certain local traditions which are practiced within the Kuki tribes. This will further include the participation of the Chief, the wife of the performer and other important members of the tribe.
Sa-Ai Ceremony is one of the important traditional rituals which prevail within the Kuki tribes of Manipur. As the hunter who decides to perform the ritual bears the risk of life, this makes the occasion quite significant as the person may face such occasions when he will never return. In such conditions, everyone close to the performer bids a farewell to him as he leaves for the ritual.
