Rohit Shetty is a noted Bollywood director and cinematographer who is recognized for several popular Bollywood flicks. Many of his films have turned to be a huge commercial success. Starting the career as an assistant director, Rohit gradually moved towards film direction presenting several hits. He has collaborated with the Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan for many of his projects. In addition to films, he has also ventured into Indian television where he hosted a few shows.
Early Life of Rohit Shetty
Rohit Shetty was born on 14th March 1974 in the city of Mangalore in Karnataka. His father M. B. Shetty was an actor as well as fight master who was popularly known as Fighter Shetty. He had acted in Hindi as well as Kannada movies.
Career of Rohit Shetty
Rohit Shetty began his film career as an assistant director at the young age of 17. He first worked with Kuku Kohli in Ajay Devgan`s debut film Phool Aur Kaante. Subsequently he assisted him in his next venture Ek Aur Kohinoor, which however failed to release. Rohit also worked for the films Suhaag, Haqeeqat and Zulmi. Meanwhile he developed a good rapport with Ajay Devgan following which he worked with Anees Bazmee in Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha and Ajay Devgan`s home productions Hindustan Ki Kasam and Raju Chacha.
Rohit Shetty made his directional debut with the Bollywood flick Zameen starring Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu in the year 2003. The film however failed at the box office. He shot to fame with his 2006 comedy film Golmaal: Fun Unlimited featuring Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Sharman Joshi. The film performed moderately at the box office receiving positive reviews. In the year 2008 he directed a comic-thriller Sunday starring Ajay Devgan, Ayesha Takia and Arshad Warsi which once again gained good critical response. His next venture was Golmaal Returns which was a sequel of Golmaal. It received slow opening and was negatively reviewed. However later it managed to be a financial success. All the Best: Fun Begins was his 2009 release followed by Golmaal 3 in 2010. The latter marked his biggest hit till that period. In the year 2011 he directed Singham which featured Ajay Devgan in the role of a police inspector fighting against corruption. The film met with praises for action sequences and Devgan`s performance. Bol Bachchan under Shetty`s direction was another commercial success.
In 2013 Rohit Shetty directed Chennai Express in which Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone played the lead roles. The film became the highest-grossing Bollywood film in the domestic market that year and also became a huge success overseas, marking the third-highest grossing Bollywood film overseas. The movie also bagged a number of box office records for having biggest opening weekend, highest single-day gross, highest paid preview and many more. Apart from film direction Shetty also judged the television show Comedy Circus. He hosted the fifth season of India`s stunt/action reality game show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi. The third season of a television show titled Big Switch was also anchored by him.
