Rohini is a renowned mythological character. She is the wife of Vasudeva and the mother of Balarama and Subhadra. She played an important role in the bringing up of Krishna.
Vasudeva the husband of Rohini was also married to Devaki, sister of Kansa. After the wedding of Vasudeva and Devaki there was prophesy that predicted the death of Devaki`s Kansa at the hand of the eighth son of Devaki. Kansa imprisoned the newly wedded couple. Rohini was left alone and distraught.
Kansa individually killed each child immediately after it was born to the Vasudeva and Devaki. Devaki was pregnant with the seventh child but the infant was not killed. The seventh unborn child was amazingly transferred from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini. Rohini had long been longing for a child of her own. The baby born to Rohini was named Balarama. Balarama grew up to be a great warrior and support of his younger brother Krishna.
Krishna was the eighth child of Devaki. Immediately after the birth of Krishna he was miraculously moved to Gokula in secrecy. Rohini also shifted to that place so that she could look after her step-son Krishna. It is due to this proximity that the two brothers, Balarama and Krishna, grew up together.
Krishna killed Kansa and released Vasudeva and Devaki from imprisonment. Rohini was blessed with the birth of another child, a daughter named Subhadra. Subhadra was married to Arjuna, the Pandava, who was a nephew of Vasudeva. Rohini is the ancestors of every succeeding monarch from the Kuru dynasty.
