R K Gavai, Former Governor of BiharRamkrishnan Suryabhan Gavai , the former governor of Bihar state of India. He is agriculturist by profession. R K Gavai originally belongs to the state of Maharashtra. R K Gavai is an avid wrestler. He has contributed a lot to the freedom struggle of India. This well known social activist was born on 30th October, 1929 to father Shri Suryabhanji Gavai at Village- Darapur, District - Amravati, State - Maharashtra.

R K Gavai graduated from Vidarbha Mahavidyalay, Nagpur University, Amravati, Maharashtra. On 29th November 1959, R K Gavai married to Smt. Kamaltai Gavai and the couple has two sons and one daughter. R K Gavai throughout his political career held the following positions: Member, Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1964 to 94, Deputy Chairman, Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1968 to 78, Chairman, Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1978 to 84, Leader of Opposition, Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1986 to 88, Elected to 12th Lok Sabha on 1998 and became the member Consultative Committee, Ministry of Agriculture and Committee on Urban and Rural Development for 1998-99.

Other than political organizations , R K Gavai also held positions in Social and cultural organizations like he served as the President of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti, Deeksha Bhoomi, Nagpur and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Shiksha Prasarak Mandal, Amravati; Running various colleges (Arts, Commerce, Science, Law & M.B.A.), High Schools and Hospitals. R K Gavai also held the post of Vice-President and Member of Executive Committee of World Fellowship of Buddhists Member, Maharashtra Branch of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

R K Gavai was conferred the National Integration awards for peace and harmony and also the recipient of Kusta Mitra Award. He attended the 15th and 20th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held at Trinidad and Tobago in 1969 and at Colombo in 1974 and at Lusaka 1978. He also participated in the Asian Conference for Family Planning and Women, Child Welfare, Peking (China) 1980. In the 13 to 19 General Conferences of World Fellowship of Buddhists, which was held in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, U.S.A., Korea, Taiwan and Bangkok, R.K.Gavai was among the invitees. He also attended the 20th Conference of World Fellowship of Buddhists, Sydney (Australia) in the year 1998.
